Hard Drive Electronic Faults & Issues

Typically hard drive electronic faults occur as a result of a power surge, usually from the power supply of a computer or an external hard drive enclosure.

Our engineers have the necessary skills needed to identify electronic failures with the hard drive’s circuit board (PCB) and to resolve the issue. The most common issues are:

Over Voltage

A hard drive exposed to over voltage usually results in an instant issue with the hard drives circuit board. The most common reasons for over voltage are incorrect use of the wrong external power supply, a faulty computer power unit, or a power spike brought on by a power cut or electrical storm.

The most symptoms include:

Faulty Components

Hard drives can suffer from faulty components that are not the fault of an external power supply. Diodes on the circuit board can fail or burn out causing a break in the circuit board performance. Typically the symptoms for this issue are:

What to do when experiencing an electronic fault?

The general misconception is that simply swapping the circuit board with one from a same model working hard drive will deal with the problem; this is not always the case. Modern day hard drives have components on the circuit board that are unique to that drive. Therefore, a simple swap over will not work. Further configuring and manipulation of the hard drive firmware is required before a recovery can be considered.

Furthermore, swapping the circuit board with a similar one can lead to other issues resulting in further damage to the hard drive’s read/write assembly. This can turn a reasonably easy issue into a more difficult one to resolve. This could decrease the chances of a complete data recovery, and also may be more expensive.

Contact Kingdom Data Recovery and we will give you a free consultation and diagnosis of the problem. No costs are incurred unless we are successful in retrieving your data.
