We met Gavin at a networking event in Edinburgh and after a brief exchange of what we did Gavin proceeded to tell us about his trip to the Galapagos Islands and the amazing videos and pictures he took whilst there especially having the opportunity to swim with the seals, truly a trip of a life time, however…
Gavin told us that the SD card the images and videos were stored on had become corrupt and he was unable to open them. He had taken the card to a PC Repair store who managed to get most of the photos back but were unable to recover the videos of him swimming with the seals. We took the SD card from a none too optimistic Gavin and managed to recover his video footage in a quick turnaround. Gavin was understandably delighted and had this to say.
“Having discovered that all my video footage from a recent once-in-a-lifetime holiday had become corrupted and seemingly useless, I had taken the SD cards to a specialist in the city who attempted but failed to recover the files. When the guys offered to take on the task I was therefore not over-optimistic about their chances of success. Duncan contacted Kingdom Data Recovery with a disastrous situation. After installing a piece of software on the laptop it began to run very slowly. Laura contacted Kingdom Data Recovery when the connector on her faulty USB pen drive had snapped. An IT company had attempted to repair the connector by soldering it together but this did not work. Laura had important documents and digital photos on the pen drive that she needed recovering.
As re-soldering the connector did not work we carried out a NAND extraction of the flash memory chip on the USB Drive circuit board, this involves de-soldering the chip off the board then putting into a device that decrypts the data so it can be recovered. Peter is a professional photographer and due to the size of the digital photos he produces he requires a lot of storage space. Peter uses an external hard drive to store his raw image files and uses a further external hard drive for backup. This is very a sensible approach and one that would normally avoid problems like losing accidently deleted files or if one of the hard drives failed. However what happens when both external hard drives fail possibly due to malware or both coming from a faulty batch? Disaster ensues.
Facing the prospect of losing a whole year’s worth of work Peter first tried a well known High Street computer store that offers amongst other things, data recovery. However they only managed to recover 20% of the total data on the drive and it came in a raw format which means the folder/file names were not intact. Sometimes the cheaper option is not always the best one. Not all Data Recovery companies will rip you off with excessive prices; data recovery is not that cost prohibitive however some work is very complex and prices can reflect that but this is only in extreme cases. Unfortunately there are companies in our industry that are lack experience and are not as conscientious; this is true in most industries.
Fortunately there are more honest data recovery companies than dishonest, so do not feel put off contacting a specialist, they are still best equipped to deal with your data loss issues.
Always get at least three estimates from different data recovery firms, if you describe the problem accurately they should be able to at least give you a good idea of the issue and a rough estimate over the phone, remember the cheapest price is not always the best. What you should be judging is the expertise of the person on the phone and if their diagnosis matches other companies you have contacted. Do not pay for a diagnosis, if the device has not been tampered with by yourself or a third party most data recovery companies will diagnose the problem free of charge.
Mike contacted Kingdom Data Recovery when his 64 GB memory stick was no longer recognised by his computer.
Mike had a lot of sentimental pictures on the memory stick and was desperate to have them recovered. After diagnosis it was determined the issue was with the controller chip and a NAND extraction was required to retrieve the data.
